ORANGE, Calif. – Senior Kelsey Mackin set the tone for the Chapman University women's lacrosse season on Saturday afternoon scoring seven goals to help the Panthers to a 15-5 victory over Pomona-Pitzer at Wilson Field. Mackin's seven-goal effort in the home opener tied the school record she set last season against Puget Sound.
Mackin put her first three goals on the board over the beginning six-minute span. Pomona responded with two goals of their own but the Panthers finished the first half on a 6-0 run to take the lead 9-2.
In the second half, the Sagehens broke up the Panther run with a hat trick from Rebecca Long. However, the Panthers responded with six goals of their own during the second half to solidify the win.
Sophomore Danielle Zahn scored three goals, including two in the first half while also grabbing a game-high eight ground balls. Senior Dillan Watts was a defensive threat for Chapman causing five turnovers and junior Stacey Zuppa led Chapman with four draw controls.
Chapman forced 20 turnovers and took a total of 37 shots on goal, while holding the Sagehens to just 18 shots.
Up next, Chapman will host Occidental on Sunday, February 26 at Wilson Field.
