ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's water polo team fell in an early hole and never recovered as it fell 11-6 to visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday. Sophomore Graham Asalone scored four of the Panthers' six goals.
A hard-fought first quarter saw CMS take a 3-1 lead. Asalone's second goal came just over four minutes into the second quarter to bring Chapman within one. However, the second-place Stags scored the final two goals of the first half and the first three goals of the third quarter to pull away to an 8-2 lead.
Sophomore Evan Belli's 6-on-5 goal ended the Stags' run but the Stags just over a minute later to close out a 4-1 advantage in the third quarter. Chapman scored three times in the fourth to trim the lead but was unable to climb all the way back.
Senior Wesley Hertel made 10 saves in three-plus quarters before freshman Owen McNichols took over in goal.
The Panthers stay home for a midweek SCIAC contest against Caltech. The Panthers host the Beavers on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
