One stroke gives Panthers first dual-match win
LOMPOC, Calif. – A one-stroke victory gave the Chapman University men's golf team their first win of the season. The Panthers defeated Cal Lutheran University 313-314, Tuesday at Tierra Rejada Golf Club. Strong finishes from senior Van Pierce and sophomore Addison Devone – both shot a even-par 36 on the back nine – helped the Panthers come away with the win.
The victory was the second close dual match between the two schools in a week. Chapman and Cal Lutheran tied 313-313 just six days before at the Tustin Ranch Golf Club. The nationally-ranked Kingsmen came into the afternoon ranked No. 14 in the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) top-25.
Pierce and Cal Lutheran sophomore Matt Snyder tied for the low round with a 76 on the par 72 course. Meanwhile, Devone finished one shot off the leaders with a 77 and junior Travis Walker tied with Cal Lutheran sophomore Jack Williams and junior Tyler Straeter with a score of 78.
The Panthers will return to Tustin Ranch on Thursday when they host Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer.
