Freshman Kevin Gregersen made the most of his opportunity with a school record of eight RBIs in just his second career start. In the Panthers 23-1 rout of Ithaca on Wednesday, the freshman catcher was 4-for-4 with a homer and eight RBIs in the first four innings.
The Walnut Creek, Calif., native started his day with a two-RBI single in the first. A bases loaded single in the second dove in another run – his third RBI of the day. He brought in two more runs in the third with another single to put him within striking distance of the previous record of seven.
With two on in the fourth, Gregersen launched a pitch down the right field line that curled inside the foul pole for a three-run homer and a new school record. The previous record was set in 1999 when the feat was accomplished twice. Pat Stevens drove in seven on February 12, 1999 and Eric Albright matched his teammate April 9 of the same year.
